Thanksgiving at The Beacon of Groveton in Alexandria, VA is a tapestry of history and heartfelt appreciation. As the holiday season approaches, it's vital to grasp the authentic roots of this cherished day. In 1620, when the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, they met the Wampanoag tribe, who generously shared farming and trade wisdom, emphasizing the reciprocal relationship with nature and the significance of gratitude. This meeting of cultures brought together unique traditions, recognizing the power of gathering in thanks.

In 2023, a traditional part of the holiday is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a visual spectacle of balloons, floats, and performances. Whether you watch on NBC or stake out a spot along the 2.5-mile route, you're in for a treat.

Thanksgiving surpasses tradition; it's a national holiday devoted to unity and appreciation, a moment to reflect on blessings and cherish time with loved ones. And of course, the food. While the turkey might steal the show, the side dishes bring the pizzazz to the table! Get ready to jazz up your holiday spread. From Homemade Mac and Cheese, Garlicky Green Beans, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, Cranberry Chutney, and Buttermilk Biscuits, they might just outshine the main event. The best part is that you can whip up these culinary delights with ease in your state-of-the-art kitchen at The Beacon of Groveton!

Summer is sadly winding down The Beacon of Groveton residents. Now that the warm weather and the longer days are coming to an end, it’s time to squeeze in some last-minute activities to keep busy and entertained.

With the sun constantly shining, everyone has a little extra pep in their step. We all want some extra special things to do this season. Throw on a cute outfit, get out in the sun, and have some fun in Alexandria, VA.

A few lively outdoor activities include having a picnic, going to a parade, making tye-dye clothes, watching a game, or taking a hike. While spending time outside this season, bring out your inner kid and have a ball! Run through sprinklers, go down a slip ‘n’ slide, ride ferris wheels and roller coasters, or have a water balloon fight. Take advantage of the great outdoors by taking your workouts outside! Go for a relaxing stroll, an intense run, or meditative yoga.

Or maybe you prefer some relaxation. Of course, going to the beach and sunbathing, reading, or listening to music is always a good idea. If you can’t get to a beach then star-gazing, spa days, wine tasting, or even going tech-free for a day can all be incredibly relaxing!

Here at The Beacon at Groveton, we consider ourselves lucky to be located in a city as charming and lively as Alexandria. From the rich history to the natural beauty, there are so many reasons why Alexandria is the perfect place to call home.

Located just a few miles outside Washington D.C., Alexandria offers easy access to the capital while still maintaining a suburban feel. Residents get the best of both worlds with a multitude of transportation options, including a metro system, Amtrak station, and access to major highways. The close proximity to D.C. also means Alexandria is privy to stunning views of the Potomac River, especially along Waterfront Park. The sights of the river are visible along sweeping green banks, perfect for picnics, relaxing walks, and enjoying the natural beauty of Alexandria. Hiking is also a big outdoor activity here, as the Mount Vernon Trail is easily accessible from Jones Point Park.

Alexandria is also steeped in American history and is home to many American landmarks, including George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The Carlyle House, an eighteenth-century historic house, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center, are also popular destinations for tour visits. Alexandria also boasts an impressively intact Old Town district, where visitors can experience the past and stroll along cobblestone streets, see well-preserved colonial architecture and witness firsthand the history we are so proud of.

Alexandria is also bustling with plenty of local events and festivals, including a weekly farmers’ market and an annual Old Town Art Festival. There’s rarely a shortage of things to do, including concerts, parades, and seasonal festivals. Local nightlife is also a big draw for residents, as Alexandria is known for its diverse food scene. Sample cuisines from a variety of cultures and enjoy excellent seafood like oysters, lobster, and more.

Our community here in Alexandria has so many incredible qualities, from our outdoor scene to our beloved history and culture. We can’t recommend living here enough, and we hope you experience everything that makes our city so special.

In May, there are two very important holidays to celebrate this month. The Beacon of Groveton encourages our residents to take part in celebrating Mother’s Day and honoring Memorial Day.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, founded by Anna Marie Jarvis in the United States. The start of Mother’s Day as we know it now was actually started by Anna Jarvis’ mother, Ann Jarvis.

Later in life, Anna Jarvis did not appreciate the commercialization of Mother’s Day. This year, celebrate Mother’s Day the old-fashioned way at The Beacon of Groveton. You don’t need flowers and fancy dinners to show your appreciation for your Mom this year. Make homemade cards, make her breakfast in bed, or do some extra chores around the house. Figure out the best ways to celebrate your Mother at no cost this year.

This year, Memorial Day is honored on May 29, 2023. The Beacon of Groveton is proud to celebrate Memorial Day as a federal United States holiday that honors America’s military members who have lost their lives in service to our country. Always observed on the last Monday of the month of May.

For a lot of Americans, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Many people attend parades, go to the beach, or have barbeques with family and friends- which can be hosted right here at The Beacon of Groveton. But at its core, Memorial Day is a yearly remembrance for those who have sacrificed their lives in the military service.
